There are some shows that are so great and memorable that you consistently want to revisit them again and again- Big Thief’s show at Club Cafe with Sam Evian is definitely one of those shows. The Saddle Creek label mates’ performances complemented one another nicely and every part of each perform demanded the audience’s full attention. The intimate venue set a nice environment for the strong sets by both bands. First up was Sam Evian, who grabs your attention with his melodic, smooth vocals and the band’s reflective compositions. Evian’s set was comprised of his tracks from his debut album entitled “Premium”, which was released last year. The set was honest, had a dream- like feel and with beautifully crafted tracks, which have that feeling of the music washing over you.
After a short band switch, Big Thief went on stage and took off with their first song. Lead singer and guitarist Adrianne Lenker’s dynamic voice brings you into focus and makes you really hear the lyrics in the songs. Their set also came from their debut album called “Masterpiece”, which is an accurate description of the tracks themselves. Through each song, Big Thief takes you through a different story that is lead by the great singing style of Lenker and the talented playing of the rest of the band, which includes Buck Meek, James Krivchenia and Max Oleartchik. When they start playing you can hear the emotion and dynamics of each nicely crafted song. With the room entirely quiet, Big Thief engulfed the whole of Club Cafe with their beautiful and impactful songs. Big Thief’s stage presence and performance is endearing, thoughtful and a great experience through every single song. They transport you to another place, where in that moment, it’s like it’s just you and the incredible Big Thief on stage.
