The Gloomies

The Californian duo The Gloomies released a seasonally appropriate track in the form of “Palms,” earlier this week. The band is comprised of frontman Andy Craig and drummer Chris Trombley, and have been releasing music under this moniker since 2016’s debut EP, Blackout. The band mixes jazz elements with indie-pop and psych on their latest track, “Palms.” The new song is a step in a new direction for The Gloomies, incorporating atmospheric yet bright psych and dance elements, while still drawing from past surf-rock influences.

The opening vocal harmonies on “Palms” channel Currents-era Kevin Parker vocals, yet the twangy guitar retains The Gloomies’ surf rock roots. Backing twangy harpsichord-esque chords add a nice chamber pop blended psych touch, aiding the summer sadness feel The Gloomies conjure on the single.

While Romance isn’t out until 7/13 via Thrill Me Records, take a listen to the single “Palms” below and follow The Gloomies here
